From scientific breakthrough to commercial development
Aurora Hydrogen grew from an idea generated by Dr. Murray Thomson, a leading combustion expert who has worked with methane pyrolysis for several decades. Through collaboration with key industry experts, the Aurora Hydrogen team has pioneered microwave-driven methane pyrolysis. Aurora explored the potential of applying highly efficient microwave heating to methane pyrolysis to produce hydrogen with less energy and no CO₂ emissions. But this was not just a science experiment — Aurora’s work led to the development of a novel, energy efficient, emission-free hydrogen production technology.
With support from investors and development partners including Energy Innovation Capital, Williams, Chevron, Shell and Sherritt, the Aurora Hydrogen team went on to build a 200 kg-H₂ /day industrial-scale demonstration plant in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Results from the pilot are informing and accelerating commercialization of Aurora’s low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen production technology.
